Frances L Byrne
Dr Byrne received her PhD in 2012 from the Children's Cancer Institute (UNSW). During her postdoc at the University of Virginia (USA) she studied cancer cell metabolism and obesity-related endometrial cancer (Byrne et al. Cancer Res 2014) and was awarded a Hope Funds for Cancer Research fellowship (2014-2017). She returned to Australia in 2014 to the School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences (UNSW). With support from the Cancer Institute NSW (ECR fellowship 2018-21 and Career Development fellowship 2022-24) she leads an independent lab and team of students (PhD, honours, and undergraduates) and a research assistant. She has established national and international collaborations with other leading researchers, gynecologic oncologists, pathologists, and medicinal chemists. Dr Byrne's laboratory is investigating how obesity contributes to cancer development and developing new treatments for endometrial cancer.
